Wapekeka First Nation's Thanksgiving Cookout

Author // Meagan Ann

Clara Winnepetonga held a community Thanksgiving cookout on Saturday October 12th in Wapekeka First Nation, 450 kilometers northeast of Sioux Lookout. Members of the community gathered by the lake and everyone took part in the preparations and cooking. There was a lot of great traditional food on the menu: fried moose meat, moose stew, smoked moose, goose, goose stew, smoked beaver and walleye.

Nearly all of the foods were cooked outdoors over campfire with help from young and old. Despite the high winds, the feast was a success and the community was able to gather over an extravagant meal with friends and family. Definitely something to be thankful for!
